01How does GrowBot work?

He has four parts. The app is where you meet him: it connects his mind to your phone's screen, camera, microphone and movement sensors. His soul file is who he is: his name, personality, what he wants and what he remembers. It grows as you spend time together, and when he dreams he decides what to keep. The AI models power his thinking, using Brain Credits or your own model. And a body, whenever you want one.

02Will my phone work?

03What do I get with the GrowBot Pass?

The GrowBot app and a Brain Credit Pack for thinking, talking and discovering together. You also get free DIY body-build instructions, or you can buy a kit of parts. The Pass is digital; no hardware ships with it.

04What are Brain Credits and how long do they last?

Brain Credits cover the various AI models GrowBot calls, along with background services like speech transcription. The initial Brain Credit Pack lasts most GrowBots a few months. Top up $1–10 as needed. In the new app, you can also choose the free brain (limited speed and behaviour), or run your own AI model.

05Can I run my own AI model?

Yes. Bring your own OpenRouter API key and paste it in. Easy. Or connect a local model running on your computer; that route takes some setup. Explore the local-brain guide ↗

06Do I need to buy the Pass and the kit?

The kit includes a GrowBot Pass. You can start with the Pass and add a body later, or go straight to the kit. Already have a Pass? Redeem your kit’s code on your existing GrowBot to add another Brain Credit Pack, handy when you start playing with its body!

07Do I need robot experience?

No experience required! You can meet GrowBot in your browser before building anything. When you want legs, the starter kit and step-by-step guide are the simplest place to begin. Many people have told me this was their first ever build.

A brief history of GrowBotics.

The first I Gave ChatGPT a Body video has over 5 million views and brought a flood of "I want one" emails.

where it started

Demand and chip shortages led me to old phones: all the sensors were already there, along with a faster chip.

My goal was the world's cheapest, easiest AI robot, one anyone could make. What took me months, you can now build in about 20 minutes: a jumpstart into AI robots, or what we've been calling GrowBotics.
